Where do you serve food? Depending on the tableware you use, even the simplest food can appear as though it is a grand feast. Yi Yoon-shin is one of Korea's first-generation contemporary ceramists, who has been making everyday ceramic ware to add elegance to the table for the past 20 years.

After acquiring her bachelor's and master's degrees at Hongik University College of Fine Arts, she studied ceramics at the Kyoto City University of Arts. When she initially began specializing in this field, she shared the common view that ceramics as artwork to be appreciated without much usefulness in everyday life, but as she delved into this field, she realized the need to incorporate the modern trends to create practical ceramic ware. This decision was based on a sudden realization that in Korea, known for its Goryeo celadon and Joseon white porcelain, ceramists have been focusing solely on preserving the traditions despite having an excellent infrastructure for the ceramics industry to develop even further. She has contributed to the development of the Korean ceramics industry by presenting ceramics in traditional style for daily use. She also gained recognition on the global stage and was even featured on the American Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).

Yi Yoon-shin demonstrated her artistic sense even when she was young. As an only child, she spent most of her time, drawing, acting and appreciating music by herself. She even learned musical instruments and practiced singing to get into music, but after several failed attempts, she finally found her calling in the field of art.

홍익대학교 미술대학과 같은 대학원을 졸업, 일본으로 건너가 교토시립예술대학원에서 도예를 공부한 이윤신. 당시 그가 도예를 시작할 때만 해도 도자기는 실생활에 유용한 그릇이기보단 감상용에 불과했다. 고려청자, 조선백자로 대표되는 전통적인 도자기 강국이었던 한국이 우수한 도자 산업 인프라를 갖췄음에도 전통을 보존하기에만 급급했던 모습이 안타까웠던 그는 실용적 도자기를 시대상에 반영하기로 마음먹는다. 전통 도예를 그대로 재현하는 대신 현대생활에서 요구되는 요소들을 적극 받아들여 재창조하는 방식으로 도예문화의 발전에 기여하고자 노력했다. 그 결과, 수차례 개인전시회와 미국공영방송 PBS에 소개되는 등 세계무대에서도 높은 평가를 받게 된다.

이미 어릴 적부터 넘치는 '끼'로 인해서 다방면으로 예술가 기질이 있었던 이윤신. 외동딸로 혼자 있는 시간이 많았던 그녀는 연기를 하거나, 그림을 그리면서 하루의 일과를 보냈다고! 당시 음악 쪽으로 가보고 싶어 악기를 배우고 노래도 했지만 여러 시도 끝에 좌절을 경험하고 미술을 택했다.
